Since the earliest settlement within Te Whakarewarewa geothermal valley, people have cooked using the steam and hot water naturally available within the thermally active landscape. Paddle below native bush, past steep cliffs and mini inlets that kayaks can only harbor into at (Whakamoenga Point) before the striking carvings (14 meter-high) come into view. Your experienced guide will captivate you with fascinating stories and legends behind creation of the carving's and their cultural significance to the lake and surrounding areas while you float beneath them inches away in awe.

After concluding your breakfast, you head out of Franz Josef and follow an ancient greenstone trail. View the sheer drop of Thunder Creek Falls and the grand sight of Mt Hooker, flanked on three sides by extensive glaciers.
Travel over Haast Pass, marking a change from the rainforest marvel of the wild West Coast to the alpine scenery of the Southern Lakes.
From here, you will travel further into Central Otago. View Lake Wanaka, where the shoreline is charmingly lined by poplars and willows, followed by the vivid blue waters of Lake Hawea.
It is a day of gorgeous lakes, as after Hawea you will gravel over to Cromwell, situated next to the sparkling pristine waters of Lake Dunstan. Stop in at a local orchard for a taste of some of the town's delicious stone fruit then continue your journey to Te Anau.

Check in at The Real Journeys Visitor Centre Te Anau, located at 85 Lakefront Drive 20 minutes prior to departure.
Cruise across beautiful Lake Te Anau, to the Cavern House.
On arrival, learn about the caves and view fascinating displays. Your guides will then take you in small groups by path and small boats underground into the caves.
Highlights include incredible limestone caverns, whirlpools, waterfalls and the magical glow-worm grotto.
After, you will return to Te Anau. This tour is not suitable for wheelchair passengers or for heeled shoes. Steps are involved.
